Freshmen students at Leaders High School, as well as their crew leaders and peer mentors, went camping for three days and two nights at Sharpe Reservation. They were there from October 22-24. Most students said that the phones should have been allowed for safety reasons, but without phones they had opportunities to communicate with peers.
Parezay Nawaz, a senior at Leaders high school, said that one of the main reasons she didn’t go on the trip was the no phones policy.
“It changed my whole perspective on the trip. Originally I was going to go but then when my parents heard that I couldn’t have my phone they said no because they were concerned about my safety and for myself I was also concerned because like what if I got lost I couldn’t contact anyone?”
Parezay Nawaz also said that having her phone is important to her for many different reasons. One of them is important emails.
“It’s very important for me to have my phone when I’m away from home and when I’m home in general because like I said before you know it’s a matter of my safety and I don’t really trust myself without my phone?” Micheal Guiracocha is a freshman at Leaders High School and he thinks that phones should have been allowed and that is the reason some people didn’t go on the trip. Michael is an example of a student who did go on the trip and he says phones should have been allowed but at certain times.
“The hardest part was trying to entertain myself at night or when we were not really doing anything… that was probably the hardest part of the whole trip. At the beginning I wasn’t gonna go but I did.”
Micheal G also said that without the phone there was not really a big source of entertainment at night which was a bad thing about the trip.
“Yes I wish I had my phone at night when I could sleep or when something fun was happening so I could take videos for the memory.”
Micheal Morales is also a freshman at Leaders High School who went on the camping trip and he says that phones should not have been allowed and that it was fun either way.
“I didn’t really talk to anybody and it felt kinda weird because I’m so used to having my phone with me but this was a chance for me to be able to make friends and this was one benefit of not having my phone”.
Micheal M says that the no phones policy was a really good opportunity for him to make friends and that although he didn’t have his phone the trip was still fun.
“I think it was a good idea because most of the trip was fun but sometimes I just wanted to be able to use my phone like during eating or when we were roasting the marshmallows. It would be nice to record it for memories.”
All in all, students at Leaders High School all had different opinions on the no phones policy but most students think that phones should have been allowed. Even though they weren’t, the camping trip was still a lot of fun.
