What makes some teachers stand out more than others? Even just a few months into the school year, freshmen at Leaders High School are already forming strong opinions about which teachers they enjoy the most. From classroom environment to personal connections, different qualities can shape how students experience learning during their first year of high school.
A positive classroom environment is one reason students enjoy certain teachers. Freshman Kevin Marte described his favorite teacher, Ms. Martial, as someone who makes learning fun and encouraging. “The class environment is really positive and productive, and it actually makes me want to learn and participate in discussions,” he said.
A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that students are more likely to participate and stay motivated in classrooms where teachers create supportive and welcoming learning environments. Kevin’s experience shows that a welcoming environment can make a big difference for freshmen.
Other students appreciate teachers who give extra help. Freshman Daniel Roytman said that Ms. Tissir stands out because of her one-on-one support. “One thing Ms. Tissir does differently is taking time to talk one-on-one with students who are struggling, just to make sure they really understand the lesson,” he explained.
A 2024 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that students who receive individual attention from teachers are more confident, engaged, and successful. One-on-one help can be especially important for freshmen adjusting to high school work.
Some students value teachers who build personal connections in the classroom. Freshman Noah McAuley said that feeling understood and supported by a teacher plays a big role in who he enjoys learning from. “Something that makes a teacher my favorite is the ability of them to relate to students. And academically they can teach very well and not give a lot of work,” he said.
Research from Athens Journal of Education from 2023 shows that students perform better when teachers understand their needs and build real connections. Feeling supported can make students more motivated and confident in their learning.
Overall, freshmen at Leaders High School say the teachers they like most are those who create a positive classroom environment, offer extra support, and take time to connect with students. These qualities help freshmen feel more comfortable, confident, and motivated as they adjust to high school.
