I recently interviewed Ms. Cruz’s crew, a group of sophomores who have been together for two years. Even though they are growing closer, they still claim that they have some weak points in their communication with each other.
Crew Insights:
One crew member, Marcus, mentioned, “My crew doesn’t have any conflicts cause we don’t talk to each other that much.” Their communication with each other is low.
Another crew member, Yoana, added, “I would want me and my crew members to talk more to each other. It always seems like everyone in the crew is doing their own thing.”
As they took turns sharing their thoughts in a circle, the whole crew agreed that their communication with each other was quite low, and they would want to talk more to grow closer moving on after being together for two years.
Observations:
Although they say they need to work on communication, watching the crew play telephone showed me they are working on communication skills. Even though the game was quiet, there was still plenty of laughter and optimism while playing. However, not all crew members were in on the fun; some felt uncomfortable participating.
The crew had a lot to work on in making other crew members feel like they belonged and that they could let themselves come out of their comfort zones. And at the same time respecting each other’s boundaries.
When asked how to describe their crew members: Yoana shared that their crew members are, “I would describe my crew as chill.” Marcus states, “Quiet.” These statements add on to the claim of the crew communicating less with each other.
They all agree that, in the future, communicating with each other and comprehending one another can inspire them to become a more connected crew. They understand that building stronger connections may take time, but with shared effort and communication, they are determined to grow closer as a crew.
