Crew has been an essential part of Leader’s High School since forever. One of these crews is led by Ms. Abby, a beloved math teacher who has always made a lasting impact on her students.
Ms. Abby’s Absence
The absence of Ms. Abby has been a noticeable shift for both the school and her crew. Sanhiya, a very outgoing member of the crew, shared, “It’s been difficult because it’s me and Ms. A trying to tell them to come to crew. The fact that Ms. Abby is not here, they just want to hang around or be in the bathroom.” Lizi, another member, added, “I would say because we’re used to her, we used to come to her if we needed anything. But, also, Ms. A is good.”
Memories
Favorite memories in crew often involve fun and connection, like shared activities and traditions. Sanhiya fondly recalled, “Ms. Abby would take us outside or when we would have our potlucks. It was such a blast.” Meanwhile, Lizi highlighted Community Meetings as her favorite part of the crew: “I like doing games during Community Meeting. I like it because it’s something new compared to my old school.”
Crew Bond
When asked about their connection with their crewmates, Sanhiya noted, “No. I feel like all of us have different interests and personalities.” Lizi, however, described the bond as “strong but pretty good.”
Despite their different responses, there’s a strong appreciation for Ms. A’s leadership. Sanhiya shared, “Ms. A is a really good crew leader. It’s just the kids. Ms. A still checks in with us, tells us what’s due at the end of the week, what we’re doing. She’s the perfect fit. I’m so happy she’s my crew leader!”
Finally, when asked to describe their crew in three words, the responses included: “boring, intelligent, love food,” by Sanhiya. And Lizi said, “smart, funny, and family.”

Mastery Passages
Completing a Mastery Passage is a big deal, and for many students, it’s both a challenge and an achievement. Sanhiya reflected on her experience, saying, “I over-thought it. It was smooth. I passed. It’s just you gotta know what you’re talking about and over-speak.” Meanwhile, Lizi, proudly shared her success: “I got all fours. I felt very accomplished.”
Students faced different obstacles in completing their Mastery Passage. Lizi admitted, “The challenging part was meeting deadlines because I like to procrastinate.” However, having an engaging topic made it easier: “The easiest part was the topic because I really liked it.”
Takeaways
Overall, Ms. Abby’s crew was very friendly, despite being easily distracted. Their willingness to be interviewed especially intrigued me because this has never happened before. I also love how they came up with the idea to play “7 Up” and easily came to an agreement with most kids enjoying the game.
