On Thursday 9th of November, a day that started like every other started off normally, according to an Instagram post by @palestinianyouthmovement, over 100+ New York City high schools were planning a walkout. With the option to echo their voice and have it be heard, most students at Leaders High School joined the protest to voice their rights with determination and unity.
One of the main goals of the walkout was to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians. The aim was to shed light on the human rights violations, displacement and unequal treatment that the Palestinians in Palestine/Israel endure. It was an opportunity for students to educate their peers, teachers, and a wider community about the genocide.
The planning began in the first period of the day, with students going around to different classrooms and spreading the message of what was happening. Many students gathered during lunch period to design/make posters and chants for the walkout.
After the walkout a few of the students went to Bryant Park, Manhattan to join a bigger protest joined by thousands of people including other high schoolers.
The walkout in solidarity with Palestine served as powerful proof of students’ compassion and determination. The collective action raised awareness about the struggles faced by Palestinians but also showcases the potential of young people to make meaningful impacts on global issues. Through the continued effort they can pave the way for a more equal and compassionate world.
