Crew has been a crucial part of the Leaders community since forever. It provides students with opportunities for social and emotional growth, character and leadership development, and thoughtful self-reflection.
A Little About The Crew
Ms. Gethers is a teacher who has never had a crew up until this year. Going to her crew for interviews felt very refreshing and it was nice to see new faces. Ms.Gethers is a very enthusiastic and outgoing person, with a lot of personality. I would say her crew is definitely like her. Although they can be loud at times, they can be controlled and Ms.Gethers does a great job doing that.
Favorite Memories
Something most of Ms. Gethers students mentioned was that they really look forward to coming to the crew all the time. Freshmen Isabella even noted that “they might be one of the best freshmen crews because of their vibe and energy”, which sets them apart from other crews.
They really enjoy playing games as a whole, which increased their bonding with one another and even started some new friendships and connections. Mahad said how he “enjoys playing cards with the crew the most”, Isabell also added on by saying that “the potlucks and other games that they’ve played were memorable.”
Bonding and Friendships
Ms. Gethers crew kids have an immaculate bond with each other like no other. Something that I’ve noticed is that the kids are very comfortable with being around each other, and are always themselves. The kids are very different yet so similar because they share the same energy and never fail to put a smile on their crew leader’s face. Isabella shared that “there is a lot of negativity in this world, and going to crew just makes everything fun.
Freshman student “Dawood” also added that “it was funny when my best friend took off his hat”. The students love teasing one another and they tend to find joy in the smallest things which is a very wholesome thing.
Some Takeaways
Something I noticed right away the moment I stepped into their crew classroom is their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in interviews, which I had not anticipated from a freshman crew. They were really honest and transparent about some of the things they like and dislike about their crew.
I would like to close off by including an important statement Ms. Gethers made about her crew, “I’m really happy to see my students doing better and improving overall, not just in their academics but as a person too. I am really excited to see where the next 4 years with my students lead me too, given that it has only been 2 semesters and I’m already starting to see a big difference.
